Alice Herz-Sommer is 109, was in a concentration camp in Terezin, and is still living, in London.

She was interviewed by Bernard Hiller in December 2011.

Everyone Matters was struck by the power of her words - and we wanted to share with you a minute of the interview, when she's asked about the secret to feeling good.

"Optimism," she said, "and looking for the good. Life is beautiful. You have to be thankful that we are living..... Wherever you look is beauty."

And lastly: "I know about the bad things, but I look for the good things."

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — BBQ is a Kansas City tradition. Kansas City style bbq is prepared differently than any other region of the country. But one local bbq competition is taking the way KC prepares bbq to a different level.

“They may know pizza, but they don’t know barbecue,” said Lawrence Langley of KCK.

David Weissman and Michael Dhaliwal say they’ve spent the past four months learning how to smoke meat and they believe their apricot glaze and other tidbits will set them above the rest.

FreezeStick

A team of yeshiva students from Yerucham in southern Israel has won second place in a global science competition. Six 14-year-old yeshiva boys from Yerucham garnered one of two runner-up awards in the First Lego League (FLL) Global Innovation competition. The First Lego League Global Innovation Award is designed to encourage and assist FLL teams to further develop their innovative solutions to real-world problems. This year, the FLL Food Factor season challenged kids around the world to solve a food safety problem.

Eitam Aharon, Ilan Ben-Hamo, Naftali Deutsch, Tidhar Gavar, Dvir Cohen and Yedidya Froyndlich of Tzvia Yeshiva emerged victorious, beating 250 other teams to become the first Israeli team to win an FLL competition. They will receive a $5,000 grant to continue their research.

They invented the “FreezeStick,” which is a fantastic device to help with food storage.  The FreezeStick, which contains chemicals, renews the freezing of ice in a cooler, gaining 10 extra hours of cooling. The stick, when folded, sets off a chemical reaction that renews the freezing of the ice. More important than keeping our franks, burgers, and drinks cold, the FreezeStick can be used to help in the transport of medicines that must be kept cold. The FLL finalist teams were honored at a ceremony at the United States Patent and TrademarkOffice.

"Ani Ma'amin" - A Song of Ultimate Faith

This true story about a Jew who composed a tune to Ani Ma’amin on a train to Treblinka is a powerful testimony to the sincere and eternal trust we have in G-d and in His promise to bring redemption. May we witness the conclusion of this story speedily in our days - enjoy!

The Rebbe of Modzitz, Rabbi Shaul Yedidya Elazar, had Chassidim throughout the major towns and cities of Poland. One of these was Reb Azriel David Fastag, who was noted for his exceptional voice throughout Warsaw. In spite of the terrible decrees, the yellow patch and the ghettos, most Jews could not fathom what was about to befall them.

Inside the crowded cars, over the clatter of the cattle cars' wheels, rose the sounds of people gasping, sighing, weeping and dying. One could hear the stifled cries of children crushed together. But in one such car, headed toward the infamous death camp Treblinka, the sound of singing could be heard.
